Job function: Medical Abortion Care

Description: Medical Director

Location: W1, Central London with some travel across the UK

Hours: Full or part-time hours

Salary: Competitive

We are looking for a suitably experienced individual to fulfil the role of UK Medical Director supporting the clinical and strategic development of our UK organisation over the coming years.  We have been through a period of significant change and following the retirement at the end of July 2019 of Dr Imogen Stephens, our current Medical Director, we are looking for a dynamic individual who will contribute to the evolution of our strong values-based service proposition, delivering critical, specialised sexual and reproductive health services to women and men across the UK.   The role presents a fantastic and interesting career development opportunity, potentially as an adjunct to working in the NHS or other provider. We are keen to explore full or part-time working depending on personal circumstances and clinical capability.  We want you to use and develop your medical leadership skills to make a real difference to the care our organisation provides.

About Us

Marie Stopes UK is a reproductive health charity, best known for its abortion services which help 70,000 women a year. Our network of welcoming clinics and local community services, together with a 24-hour confidential helpline, provide high quality, safe, accessible and compassionate advice, care and support for the women and men who need us. 95% of our clients are commissioned by the NHS.

Our clinic network is evolving as part of our strategy to be the charitable provider of choice for the women and men who turn to us for help. Our influence is growing too, as we work to increase public and political understanding of the issues women and men face in making reproductive choices.  We’re proud to be champions for reproductive choice, and we work hard every day to make a reality of women’s rights to decide whether and when to have children.

We’re looking for people who share our drive to provide the best quality care to everyone who needs our services, to join our committed teams of clinical, management and support teams.

About the Role

The post holder will be responsible for providing demonstrable clinical leadership across Marie Stopes UK, ensuring the development and maintenance of high quality clinical and client service standards, along with meeting all regulatory and statutory frameworks. In addition to leading our employed and sessional doctors, the post holder will also act as the Responsible Officer for GMC revalidation purposes and Caldicott Guardian for Marie Stopes UK.

About You

To be successful in this position you must be a medical practitioner who has been fully registered with the GMC for at least the previous 5 years and will have, but not be limited to, the following experience:

  • Working within a medical management and leadership role in a healthcare organisation
  • Post-qualification experience in sexual/reproductive health (desirable)
  • Leading programmes, including programme expansion and new product/service/method introduction

  • An understanding of information governance (essential) in a sensitive healthcare setting (desirable)
  • Ability to manage budgets
  • Experience in a commercial healthcare environment (desirable)
